Compatibility
Your VPS, at the provider you choose
Coxios works with every provider, on the most widely used Linux systems. Everything marked « Tested » was checked on a real server.
15 systems tested end to end
Every version is tested on a real, fresh VPS: full setup, then checked from the outside.
Works with every provider
Hetzner, OVHcloud, Contabo, Hostinger, DigitalOcean… Coxios connects over SSH: only the system matters.
Ubuntu and Debian tested first
The two most widespread systems on web servers, every current version. Ubuntu 24.04 LTS is the recommended choice.
Operating systems
Coxios recognizes your server's system and adapts its commands (packages, firewall, updates). "Tested" means: a fresh VPS, the setup assistant run from start to finish, then the server checked from the outside.

Hosting providers
Coxios doesn't depend on the provider: it connects over SSH to a Linux machine, and what matters is its system, tested above. If your provider rents you a VPS running one of these systems, Coxios works. Only the first login differs, and Coxios handles both cases (root password or SSH key).
| Provider | Status | First login |
|---|---|---|
| Hetzner Cloud | Works · tested by us | root with an emailed password (must be changed on first login, Coxios handles it), or an SSH key. |
| OVHcloud | Works · in production | Runs the Coxios website. Cloud images: ubuntu, debian or rocky user with an SSH key. |
| Contabo | Works | root with the password chosen when ordering. |
| DigitalOcean | Works | Droplets: root, with an SSH key or password. |
| Scaleway | Works | Instances: root with an SSH key. |
| Hostinger | Works | KVM VPS: pick an image without a control panel. |
| IONOS | Works | VPS: root and an initial password in the dashboard. |
| Vultr | Works | root with the password shown in the dashboard. |
| Linode (Akamai) | Works | root with the password chosen at creation. |
| AWS Lightsail et EC2 | Works | SSH key downloaded from AWS; ubuntu user (Ubuntu) or admin (Debian). Amazon Linux is not supported. |
| Google Cloud | Works | Compute Engine: add your public SSH key to the instance. |
| Microsoft Azure | Works | User and SSH key chosen when creating the machine. |
| Oracle Cloud | Works | Free tier is mostly ARM processors: not tested yet. ubuntu or opc user. |
| Netcup | Works | root and an initial password. |
| UpCloud | Works | root with an SSH key or password. |
| Infomaniak | Works | Cloud VPS: the image's user and an SSH key. |
| Kamatera, RackNerd, Hostwinds… | Works | Any Linux VPS reachable over SSH, running a system from the list above. |
| Ton propre serveur | Works | Raspberry Pi (ARM, not tested), mini PC, virtual machine: if SSH answers. |
A provider missing from this list works too, as long as it gives you a Linux VPS reachable over SSH running a supported system.
Prepare your VPS at any provider
Five minutes at your provider, and the rest happens in Coxios.
- 1
Pick a VPS plan
1 GB of memory is enough to start, 2 GB or more if you plan to run several apps with Docker.
- 2
Choose a plain Linux image
Ubuntu 24.04 LTS ideally. Avoid images that ship with a control panel or a preinstalled app.
- 3
Add your SSH key if offered
Otherwise, keep the root password sent by email: Coxios uses it once, then installs a key instead.
- 4
Write down the IP address
It shows up in your provider's dashboard as soon as the server is ready, often in under a minute.
- 5
Add the server in Coxios
Paste the IP and username, then run the setup assistant: it takes care of security.
